SharePoint migration
We plan and run migrations to SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365 from file servers, older SharePoint versions, other cloud storage and enterprise content systems such as IBM FileNet, keeping metadata and access rights intact.
Network drives restructured into sites and libraries rather than copied folder for folder.
On-premise SharePoint sites, lists and libraries moved to SharePoint Online.
Google Drive, Box and Dropbox content moved with owners and sharing mapped.
Documents and their metadata exported and mapped to SharePoint content types and columns.
A migration is the best chance to fix how content is organised. Before moving anything we agree hub and site structure, library design, metadata, retention needs and naming, so people can find documents after the move and governance is easier to maintain.
We choose tools to suit the source and volume: Microsoft's SharePoint Migration Tool and Migration Manager for many file-share and SharePoint moves, third-party tools such as ShareGate when you already license them or need their reporting, and custom scripts with the Microsoft Graph API for ECM sources like FileNet where metadata mapping needs more control.
Step 1
Measure content, permissions, file types and problem items such as long paths.
Step 2
Agree the target structure and migrate a pilot group to validate it.
Step 3
Move departments in planned waves with delta syncs before each cut-over.
Step 4
Train users, redirect old locations and retire the source system.
They can, but copying old permissions as they are often brings problems with it. We usually map access to groups and simplify it during the move.
Microsoft's free tools handle many file-share and SharePoint migrations well. ShareGate adds reporting, pre-checks and more control, which helps on complex or repeated moves.
It depends on content volume, the number of sites and how much restructuring is needed. We give a plan with waves and dates after the inventory.
Yes, in most cases. FileNet document classes and properties can be mapped to SharePoint content types and columns, which we test in the pilot.
Share your goals and current setup. We will come back with questions, a suggested approach and the next steps.
